- I've posted a couple messages over the last few days regarding the problem
- I was having with my USR Sportster 33.6, where it would not always
- disconnect upon getting a busy signal but would instead just sit and wait
- for the NO CARRIER disconnect. This then kept my software from re-dialing
- on a busy line. I exchanged my first modem for a second, but it had the
- same problem. This was a major downer for me, because my provider gets
- pretty busy in the evenings, and I want a modem I can leave unattended
- while it re-dials.
-
- Thus, I went back to the Computer City where I bought the modem and, by
- scrounging on the shelves, found one of the older 28.8 modems without the
- big red "NOW with 33.6 Kbps" stickers. Sure enough, I brought it home,
- hooked it up, and it works perfectly. It re-dialed 20 or 30 times
- straight without a hitch. And it is a pre-33.6 modem, with the 04/95
- ROM's.
-
- So it looks like the new 33.6 modems may have a bug that causes this
- problem. I don't know enough about modems to say this is caused by the
- 10/95 33.6 ROM's, but this seems a good guess. If this is the case, I'd
- say a word of caution to those who are in a rush to get the new 33.6
- upgrade for their existing 28.8 Sportsters. To paraphrase old wisdom,
- it's not always good to be the first to try something new...
-
- Later,
- Keith
